On Tuesday, March 25, 2025, an abatement in the crawlspace at Ethelbert School led to unforeseen air quality issues. A certified abatement company was hired and appropriate abatement safety measures were in place. The company used the chemical named Decon 30, a botanical disinfectant effective in elimination of mold and bacteria. Decon 30 is a chemical that is generally considered safe with no known adverse effects on human health, however, there were some sensitivities reported at the school. The process was halted immediately.
Out of an abundance of caution, students and staff were relocated to the Senior Citizens Club. Students were held there until parents/guardians were contacted and they could be safely dismissed to ride the bus home or be picked up from the Senior Citizens Club.
We thank the school administration, staff and families for their fast response and ability to pivot their day in order to ensure the safety of our students and staff.
Classes will resume as usual tomorrow. On the slight chance that students/staff are experiencing any symptoms, please seek appropriate medical attention and report the concerns to the school.
